marlene hawthrone-thomas

Marlene Hawthrone Thomas was born in Annapolis, Maryland and grew up between Colorado and the Washington, D.C. area. She obtained her BS in Psychology from Howard University and is working toward her MFA from Savannah College of Art and Design, Atlanta.

Her photojournalistic style was honed as photographer and editor at Howard University's Hilltop newspaper in Washington, D.C. She was also the primary photographer for the National Council of La Raza, where she documented its work towards civil rights and advocacy for Latinos in the United States.

Marlene's photography has been exhibited nationally, including SCAD's Silver and Ink exhibition, K2 Modern Art, the International Black DocuFest, at the Hammonds House and High Museums, the 12 12 Gallery in Richmond, Virginia and in alternative spaces she has co-curated with SCAD faculty at Atlantic Station, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Marlene is also a writer and poet who has shared her work with the public throughout the Washington, D.C. area. Her work has been published in Drumvoices Revue and featured in the international exhibition Anacostia Exposed Photographic and Literary Exposé.
